How Often Should You Give Your Ferret a Bath?

“Giving your ferret a bath” sounds like the setup line for a joke, doesn’t it? However, many people often ask if bathing their ferret is necessary. You may find this hard to believe, but there is actually debate over whether bathing your ferret is a good idea. Some owners are sensitive to the smell that ferrets develop and are looking for ways to make their ferret smell better. The natural reaction is to schedule a regular bath time. But others maintain that bathing a ferret regularly will actually result in an increased odor. Let’s take a look at both sides of the argument.

Those who advocate bathing your ferret normally suggest that once a week is a good schedule. Not all ferrets are open to the idea of getting wet. So bathing some ferrets will be easier than others. The normal procedure is to wet the ferret’s coat and apply some shampoo to the back of the neck. Gradually work the shampoo into an overall lather, taking care to avoid your ferret’s eyes and ears. Rinse out the shampoo with water and then towel dry. Sounds simple, right?

Other ferret enthusiasts point out that the distinctive smell you may not appreciate is part of the ferret and should be accepted as such. In fact, they say that bathing a ferret too frequently will actually cause his body to create more of the smell you’re trying to get rid of. Does that mean no baths at all? Actually, they recommend at least a few baths a year, or whenever your ferret gets really dirty.

One of the best ways to attack the ferret smell in your home is to clean your ferret’s bedding more often. It’s also a good idea to develop a habit of cleaning your ferret’s litter box daily and changing the litter more often.

I found this useful, because I was wondering myself how often you really should….because of their natural oils and such.
Once a week is deifinitly a bad idea though!!
I actually wash mine once every 4-5 months, cuz they do get more of a skunky smell as times goes on, lol.
After the bath, I spray them ( 3 little monsters! ) with a oil conditioner, and they smell great for almost 2 months! Even their bed smells like it, so I find it great!

you should give your ferret a bath once a month like on the first day or last day of the month. they love to play with paper cups and plastic bags(dont worry i have a ferret who always plays in one) and they love to take a nap on your shoulder or your tummy!! they make soft squeaky noises when asleep.<3

I have 7 ferrets. I do not bathe my ferrets with soap once a week or once a month, that’s bad for their skin. Excessive bathing can dry out their skin, causing irritating itching, dandruff and sores from scratching (I’ve seen this and so has my veterinarian). Letting ferrets play in water won’t strip their skin of essential oils so let them play in water (supervised of course) whenever. I bathe mine with approved soap maybe twice a year or when they get dirty, sometimes they get stuff stuck to their feet or covered in dirt. Cleaning their cage, washing their bedding and toys and changing litter and scrubbing litter boxes on a regular basis is the BEST approach to cutting back ferret smells. Mine don’t smell at all, when people come over they never know they’re in the house until they see their massive cage lol DON’T BATHE YOUR FERRETS SO MUCH. Soap is what strips their oils, not water so water is ok. Mine like to stick their heads in water and blow bubbles. They make great loving fun pets if you take care of them properly :-)
