Ferret Leash Training

To many ferret owners, the charm and personality of the ferret is the way it races around the house and turns up in the most unlikely places. But not all ferret owners are happy with this kind of behavior. If you’ve wondered about the possibility of leash training your ferret, you should know that it is possible. Ferrets are intelligent and can be trained to do many things. Leash training takes some step by step activities to accomplish. There’s really no reason to keep your ferret on a leash around the house, but it does provide a way to take your ferret out in public.

First of all, I assume your ferret is used to wearing a collar. If your ferret doesn’t wear a collar, then you need to get that going first and come back to leash training later. The first step is to attach a lightweight leash to your ferret’s collar. Let your ferret drag the leash around without you holding on to the other end. Do this for a few minutes at a time until your ferret seems used to the idea. Then, try walking your ferret around the house, again for only a few minutes at first, then work up to longer durations.

Once you and your ferret have mastered this activity, you’re ready to try the outside world. Again, start small and work up to longer periods. If you ferret seems agitated by the ordeal, then don’t persist in it. Take him home and try again another day. Watch for other animals along the way, they might attack your ferret. Even if they only want to play, they may not realize that your ferret is small and somewhat fragile. Be aware of any city codes that would make walking your ferret a crime. You certainly don’t want to get a ticket after all your training time.

Hi, I find your reading very helpful. Could you answer me a question please. I have been told that if you do not give a Gill a litter she will die. Is this true? If so how old can they live ’til before you mate her? Hope you can help because since I was told this I cannot seem to get it seconded.

    Thank you

    Sandra
